What Blended Learning Actually Is
Blended learning is a formal program in which a learner completes part of their instruction online, with some element of control over pace, path, or timing, and part in a supervised physical location.
The two parts are actually connected: online work feeds into the in-person session and vice versa.
You have to consider the distinction here. For instance, a course that posts slide decks online and runs unrelated classroom sessions cannot be considered blended – it’s two programs that are sharing a name. Blended design means that the online portion changes what happens in the room, and attendance changes what the learner gets online next.
Blended vs. Hybrid vs. Flipped vs. HyFlex
Terminology in this space is used loosely, and these four terms get swapped for each other constantly, including by vendors. They describe different things.

Consider two things here. First, flipped learning is a type of blended learning, not an alternative to it.
Second, hybrid and HyFlex require simultaneous delivery – the same session running in a room and streamed live – while blended does not. So if you’re actually running hybrid sessions, integrated video conferencing and in-room capture stop being the optional features and become the core requirements here.
The Blended Learning Models
This is a framework from the Clayton Christensen Institute, which categorizes blended learning by delivery pattern rather than by technology. The Institute defines four models, with rotation split into four sub-types, which is why most practitioners work from the seven delivery patterns below. Each one is listed with the operational demands it places on software.
1. Station Rotation
Learners here rotate through fixed stations on a set schedule within one classroom – one station is online; others are small-group instruction or collaborative work. In short, everyone moves through every station.
Operational Demand: Short-session online activities that are offline or low-bandwidth resilient, and that require per-station progress tracking. This is the pattern that microlearning services exist for, given that a station is rarely longer than 15 minutes.
2. Lab Rotation
It’s the same rotation, except for the online portion that happens in a dedicated computer lab.
Operational Demand: Room and lab scheduling, shared-device login handling, and its completion records that can survive learners switching machines.
3. Flipped Classroom
The direct instruction is actually delivered online before the class. Class time is spent on practice, application, and problem-solving with the instructor present.
Operational Demand: Reliable async video hosting, pre-work completion visibility before the actual session, and there’s an ability to gate or flag attendance that’s based on pre-work. Because class time becomes application time, the in-room material usually needs rebuilding around practice, which is what scenario based elearning services are designed to produce.
4. Individual Rotation
Learners will rotate through a personalized set of stations on an individual schedule rather than just a shared one.

5. Flex
Online learning is the backbone here, given that learners move through material on a fluid, self-directed schedule, with instructors on site for support, small-group sessions, and tutoring as needed.
Operational Demand: Self-paced enrollment, on-demand session booking, instructor availability management, and real-time progress dashboards so that each staff member can see who needs actual intervention. Flex is effectively on demand training with a staffed room attached to it.
6. À la Carte (Self-blend)
Learners in this blended learning model will take one or more courses entirely online while they can continue to attend a physical school or workplace for everything else.
Operational Demand: Course-level enrollment and its integration with the system of record, like an SIS in education or an HRIS in a corporate setup, so that the online course appears on the same transcript.
7. Enriched Virtual
The inverse of flipped – given that the program is primarily online, with required in-person sessions on a limited schedule that’s often conducted once a week or once a month.
Operational Demand: Infrequent but actually firm session scheduling with capacity limits and waitlists, attendance recording that’s tied to the online record, and more travel-friendly mobile access.
A note on naming
Some sources list “online lab” and “online driver” as separate models. Those are earlier names for lab rotation and enriched virtual, and they describe the same delivery patterns. Also worth knowing: most real programs run more than one model at once. A corporate curriculum might use flipped for policy training and enriched virtual for leadership development, on the same platform. If you’re running two, you need the union of their requirements, not the intersection.
Which Model Needs Which Capability
This is the mapping nobody publishes, and it’s the one that decides your shortlist. Read down your model’s row before you read any vendor’s feature page.

Two readings of this table are worth spelling out.
Flex and enriched virtual are the expensive models. They need almost everything, and both depend on session scheduling that most general-purpose platforms treat as an add-on module or a paid tier. Price them accordingly.
À la carte barely needs blended features at all. If that’s your model, you’re buying a standard LMS with a good lms integration to your SIS or HRIS, and you can ignore most of the section below.
What Blended Learning Software Has To Do That A Regular LMS Doesn’t
In a standard LMS, it’s built around a single assumption that learning happens inside the platform – content is hosted there, completed there, and recorded there.
Blended programs here will break that assumption, given that half the learning happens in a room the software can’t see. Everything below exists to close that gap.
1. Instructor-led training and session scheduling
The ability to actually create in-person sessions as first-class objects in the platform, including date, time, location, capacity, and assigned instructor. Without any of this, sessions live in a calendar or a spreadsheet, and the LMS has no actual record that they exist.
You need to look for room and resource booking, instructor availability, capacity limits, waitlists with automatic promotion, and cancellation handling. So waitlists here sound minor until you’re actually running a mandatory certification with a 20-seat room and 300 people to get through. 2. Attendance and offline completion recording
There’s a need for an LMS administrator to mark who actually showed up here, and that mark has to land on the learner’s record next to their online progress.
You may check how attendance gets captured, like manual roster marking, QR or badge scan, or an instructor app, and whether there’s a session that can be marked complete for a whole cohort at once.
You also need to check whether offline completions can be imported in bulk, given that at some point, you will actually need to record something that happened before the platform existed. If regulated training is riding on those records, the evidentiary standard is higher than most vendors assume, and it’s worth comparing against how the top compliance elearning providers handle in-person sign-off.
3. Virtual classroom integration
This would require native connections to Zoom, Teams, or Google Meet, so that a live session is created from inside the platform and the join link, recording, and attendance data come back automatically.
The distinction worth testing during evaluation: does the integration pull attendance duration back into the completion record, or does it just generate a link? Most vendors claim the integration. Fewer return the data.
4. Learning paths that mix modes
There’s a single path where step one is a video, step two is a required in-person workshop, and step three is an assessment – all with the workshop blocking progression until attendance is recorded.
This is the feature most often missing. Plenty of platforms can host both content types; far fewer can sequence them together with real prerequisites across the boundary. Sequencing the two modes so they reinforce rather than duplicate each other is an instructional design services decision before it’s a platform one.
5. Unified reporting across both modes
Unified reporting means having one completion record per learner that covers online and in-person activity – all in one report.
And if in-person data lives in a separate module that can only be exported to a separate CSV, you don’t have blended reporting – you have two systems and a manual join.
Here, you need to ask to see a single learner transcript that shows both, and a compliance report filtered across both. This is also the capability that makes elearning roi calculable, given that you can’t attribute a business outcome to a program you can only measure half of.
6. Mobile and offline access
Learners in a blended program are frequently away from a desk, like on a shop floor, in a lab, between sessions, or just traveling to a workshop.
You may check whether content downloads for offline use and syncs completion when the actual connection returns, and whether instructors can actually take attendance on a phone without a signal. Mobile delivery is also where accessible elearning most often breaks, so test the mobile player against a screen reader rather than assuming the desktop audit carries over.
7. Authoring versus hosting
So whether the platform can create content or only store it, blended programs can generate a lot of these small assets – pre-work videos, session handouts, post-session checks.
Routing every one of those through a separate tool adds friction that compounds over a term. Check whether the built-in authoring is genuinely usable or a checkbox feature, and compare it against the best elearning authoring tools before you accept a weaker native editor as part of the deal. How Requirements Differ By Organization Type
The same feature list carries very different weight depending on who’s running the program. Most blended learning roundups ignore this and present one undifferentiated shortlist.
Corporate L&D
The dominant constraint is evidence. Completion has to be defensible to an auditor, tied to a job role, and written back to the HRIS. Session scheduling matters because facilitator time is the expensive input, and waitlists and cancellations directly affect cost per learner. Prioritize unified reporting, HRIS sync, and ILT capacity management over content variety.
K-12
Rotation models dominate, which means the constraints are device sharing, bell-schedule alignment, and SIS integration. Procurement is district-level and slow, and accessibility conformance is usually a hard requirement rather than a preference. Prioritize shared-device handling, roster sync, and offline resilience.
Higher education
Flipped and HyFlex dominate, and the platform usually has to coexist with an incumbent LMS rather than replace it. LTI support becomes the deciding feature, since the blended tooling typically launches from inside the existing system. Prioritize standards support and grade passback over native course authoring.
Training providers and tutoring organizations
Sessions are the product, so scheduling, capacity, and payment are revenue functions rather than admin ones. Multi-tenant client separation and per-client branding usually matter more than depth of pedagogy features. Where Blended Programs Actually Fail
These problems show up 6 to 12 months in, and none of them appear on a vendor’s feature list.

The first two are the ones that turn into audit findings rather than inconveniences.
How To Evaluate A Blended Learning Platform
Six steps, in order. The sequencing matters, given that most bad platform decisions are made before anyone opens a demo.
- Name your model first. Work out which of the seven patterns you’re actually running, then read your row in the mapping table above. That row is your requirements list.
- Separate critical from helpful. Anything marked critical is a disqualifier if it’s missing or sits behind a tier you can’t afford. Everything else is a preference.
- Test the session layer, not the content layer. Every platform demos content well. Ask to create a session, add a waitlist, cancel it, and see what the learner receives.
- Trace one learner end to end. Enroll a test user, complete a module, mark them present at a session, then pull a single transcript. If that takes two exports, the reporting doesn’t work.

- Price the whole configuration. ILT modules, virtual classroom connectors, and extra admin seats are frequently priced separately. Get the total for your actual model, not the list price.
10 Questions To Ask A Vendor
Ask these in writing, during evaluation, before pricing is agreed.
- Is instructor-led session management included in our tier, or is it a separate module?
- Can a learning path require an in-person session as a prerequisite for the next online step?
- Does your Zoom or Teams connector write back attendance duration, or only registration?
- How does an instructor record attendance, and can they do it offline?
- Can we bulk-import historical completions from outside the platform?
- Show us one learner transcript containing both online and in-person completions.
- Do you support waitlists with automatic promotion, and room or resource booking?
- Which LTI version do you support, specifically 1.1 or 1.3?
- Does content download for offline use and sync on reconnection?
- If we leave, can we export learner records and content in a standards-compliant format?
It’s worth checking any shortlist against a neutral list of top elearning vendors, since most blended learning roundups are published by platforms ranking themselves first. The platform schedules the sessions. It doesn’t make the content worth attending.
