What an eLearning Consultant Actually Does

A course vendor just asks what you want to build. An eLearning consultant asks what's actually broken - and the gap that's between those two questions is the gap between a course nobody finishes and an eLearning program that changes how people work. We're a group of eLearning Advisors, which means our job starts well before any development and doesn't end at delivery. Here's what that actually looks like in practice.

They diagnose the problem before building anything.

One of the most expensive mistakes in corporate learning is building training for a problem that actual training can't solve. A knowledge gap, a motivation gap, and a broken process may all look identical from the outside, as they all show up as "our people aren't performing". But each one may need a completely different fix, and only one of them is solved by a course.

They design for behavior change, not content delivery.

It's easy to measure how many slides are shipped or how many learners completed a course - but it's far more valuable to measure whether anyone does their job differently afterward. An eLearning consultant designs for that second outcome from the start, so writing objectives around what people actually need to do on the job rather than just recall. An eLearning vendor optimizes the deliverable - a consultant optimizes the result.

They recommend the right solution, not just a course.

When the only thing that you sell is custom courseware, every problem may look like it needs a custom course. Given that our Learning Advisors aren't bound to a single deliverable - their recommendations can fit the problem, whether that's a full course, microlearning, simulation, or simply a better configured platform. So the same neutrality applies to technology - we don't resell an LMS, so our recommendations are based on what fits your stack; not on what truly earns us a commission.

They build measurement in from the start.

Most training is just evaluated, if at all, with a smile sheet and a completion rate, which tells you people clicked through it, not that it actually worked. So an eLearning consultant treats measurement as a design input - just defining the metrics, assessments, and 30/60/90-day checkpoints before any development begins. So we agree on those targets with you upfront, so the eLearning program stays honest and gets real evidence to take on leadership.

How We Work

There's no complex onboarding and no vague "it depends" timelines. Here's exactly what happens from the moment you can bring us a problem to the day a solution is live in your LMS - with review checkpoints at every stage so there's nothing that will surprise you at delivery.

Discovery Call - Week 1.

So a focused 30-minute kickoff with your Learning Advisor where we truly align on the learner profile, the behavior the training needs to produce, your LMS environment, and your timeline. This is where your instructional intent gets locked in, so before any single screen is built.

Instructional Design & Storyboard - Week 1–2

We translate your source content into a learning architecture like sequencing, interaction points, and assessment strategy - and hand over to you a storyboard to approve. So here's a first checkpoint: the moment you push back on structure or scope before any production investment is made.

Development - Week 2–4

With storyboards approved, we build the full course: interactions, visuals, voiceovers, quiz logics, and branching. You'll get a second review checkpoint mid-build, scoped to content accuracy and interaction behavior.

QA, Accessibility & SCORM Packaging - Week 4–5

Every eLearning course goes through our functionality testing across browsers, WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility checks, and SCORM 1.2 / 2004 / xAPI packaging that's matched to your LMS. You don't receive any file that breaks on upload.

Delivery and Launch Support — Week 5

You get a tested, LMS-ready package with platform-specific upload instructions. And so if anything surfaces after upload, a tracking anomaly, or a completion trigger that won't fire - we resolve it before any eLearning project closes.

LMS Upload, SCORM/xAPI Configuration & Launch (Week 6)

We package the eLearning course to your LMS specifications - SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, or xAPI - and either deliver the tested package for your team to upload or support you through the upload directly. We confirm completion tracking, quiz scoring, and reporting data that are firing correctly, and we hand off. So your course is live, tested, and ready for learners.

Built for Industries Where Getting Training Wrong Is a Liability

We work with organizations where a clicked-through, behaviorally inert course isn't just inefficient - it's actual exposure. So before any kickoff call, we already understand the stakes, failure modes, and regulatory pressure specific to your training environment. So here's what that looks like across verticals we know best.

Compliance

Compliance is a category most often built fast, cheap, and sometimes wrong, in which manufacturers' liability is increased instead of actually reduced. So an eLearning module that gets clicked through without genuine knowledge transfer can produce a completion record, not protection. So we design compliance training around scenario-based decisions, branching logics, and assessments that will require demonstrated understanding before a learner is actually marked certified.

Healthcare

Clinical onboarding and regulatory training in healthcare has to hold up to audit, and looks done isn't just the same as defensible. So we build with documentation trail, version control, and WCAG accessibility standards that US healthcare environments can demand - and we advise on what to prioritize when patient safety and regulatory deadlines can compete for the same limited L&D capacity.

Sales

Sales content actually has a shelf-life problem: products, messaging, and competitive positioning shift faster than most teams can update their library. So we build modular sales training: product knowledge, objection handling, consultative skills - that are all designed to be maintained without any full rebuild every time the offer changes, so your enablement keeps pace with the pitch, instead of trailing it.

Onboarding

Onboarding content ages faster than any other category, as roles shift, tools change, and most libraries will reflect how organizations worked two years ago. So we design onboarding modular by intent: role-specific paths that will update without full rebuilds and get new hires to proficiency faster than a live-session schedule allows - without any re-shooting the whole program every reorg.

Leadership Development

Now, the hardest category to convert to eLearning is that the skills are behavioral, contextual, and resistant to passive content. So we build leadership training around realistic decision points, consequence branching, and reflection prompts that will create cognitive friction real behavior change requires - not any slide deck with a quiz bolted to the end.

Frequently Asked Questions

Project Timelines and Costs

An eLearning consultant diagnoses the reason why your training isn’t producing results, then decides what to build, in what order, or whether to build at all. Unlike any eLearning course vendor that can execute whatever brief you hand over, we start with performance gaps: auditing your existing content, prioritizing your backlog, and defining a roadmap before any single module goes into development. So the job is to actually make sure you spend the budget on the right fix, not the most obvious one.

Our eLearning consulting services, including audits, backlog prioritization, and roadmap work, start at $1,500 – scoped as a flat fee during your consultation. Ongoing L&D augmentation, where a Learning Advisor can work as an extension of your L&D team – starts at $3,000. So, there’s no hidden scoping fees, and the number you approve is the number you pay.

An eLearning vendor optimizes the deliverable, and an eLearning consultant optimizes the result. A vendor just treats your project as one of fifty in a production queue – no real discovery, no instructional strategy, no ownership of outcomes. We actually work the other way – we’ll tell you when training isn’t the answer and actually recommend the lightest solution that can solve the problem, and stay accountable to whether behavior actually changed – so not just whether a file shipped.

When you’re not sure of what to build first, whether your backlog is correctly prioritized, or why previous training didn’t actually move the needle, if you already know exactly what you need to build and have the strategy locked in place, you may just need development. And if the strategy itself is the unknown, or your team is producing courses that can get you completed but don’t change performance, that’s a consulting problem first.

A clear L&D plan you own, not just a proposal. Depending on the scope that already includes content and LMS audit, a prioritized backlog, a documented training roadmap, and a measurement plan that will define how you’ll know it worked. So you leave knowing what to build, in what order, and what success looks like – whether you build it with us or in-house.

We do both. Many L&D teams start with consulting engagements to set direction, then move ahead into development or ongoing L&D augmentation once the roadmap is clear. You can also engage us for any advisory work alone and execution internally, as we’re not bound to a deliverable, so the actual recommendation always fits any problem, rather than just our production schedule.

We define it before any work starts, not after. So that means we agree on the metrics, assessment, approach, and 30/60/90-day checkpoints upfront – so the completion is the floor, not the goal. The point of measurement here is to keep any eLearning program honest: if numbers don’t move, we iterate, and so you get real evidence to take the leadership.
